Autologous Serum Skin Test and Therapy

Autologous Serum Skin Test (ASST) and Autologous Serum Therapy are specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures used in the evaluation and management of chronic spontaneous urticaria (chronic hives). These conditions are often distressing, recurrent, and may have an underlying autoimmune basis that is not always evident through routine tests.

The Autologous Serum Skin Test is a simple in-office diagnostic procedure where a small amount of the patient’s own serum is injected into the skin to assess for autoimmune activity contributing to chronic urticaria. A positive test helps identify patients who may benefit from targeted immunomodulatory treatment.

Autologous Serum Therapy involves injecting processed serum derived from the patient’s own blood at regular intervals. This therapy helps modulate the immune response, reduce disease activity, and improve symptom control in selected patients with autoimmune urticaria. Because the treatment uses the patient’s own blood products, it is considered safe and well tolerated.

Both the test and therapy are performed under medical supervision in an outpatient setting. At our clinic, patients undergo detailed evaluation and counseling before initiation. Treatment protocols are individualized to achieve better disease control, reduced medication dependence, and improved quality of life.
